Site-wide emergency evacuation exercise held

The Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) has successfully conducted a site-wide bushfire evacuation exercise at its Lucas Heights facility today, in preparation for summer.

Different safety exercises and drills are held onsite at ANSTO each year, and site-wide exercises involving external response agencies are held at least on an annual basis.

A spokesperson from ANSTO said:

“ANSTO holds a number of safety, bushfire and desktop exercises, drills and practice sessions each year, to ensure the safety of our staff in the event of an evacuation,” said the spokesperson.

“ This exercise is routine, and just as other workplaces are required to practice safety procedures, so too, is ANSTO."

“This exercise has been planned to minimise inconvenience for the surrounding community  There were traffic controllers in place to alleviate disruptions to traffic in the areas surrounding the Lucas Heights campus.”

The spokesperson said in addition to regular work with local bushfire brigades and police, ANSTO runs regular exercises with various external State and Commonwealth response agencies.
