Products and Their Use

This page provides a general description of products and their uses.  For a more detailed description, please refer to the Product Information Sheet (PIs)

Chromium [51Cr] Edetate Injection BP (Radiopharmaceutical)  (PI)

Chromium [51Cr] Edetate Injection BP is indicated for the determination of glomerular filtration rate in the assessment of renal function.

Gallium [67Ga] Citrate Injection BP (Radiopharmaceutical) (PI)

Osteomyelitis

Scan above shows Osteomyelitis of the Foot

Gallium [67Ga] Citrate Injection BP may be useful in demonstrating the presence and extent of Hodgkin's Disease, lymphomas and bronchogenic carcinoma. Positive uptake in the absence of prior symptoms may indicate a potential disease state. Gallium [67Ga] may also be useful as an aid in detecting some acute inflammatory lesions.

Indium [111In] DTPA in (Radiopharmaceutical) (PI)

Pentetate Indium Disodium in 111 is recommended for use in radionuclide cisternography.

MIBGen® - lobenguane [123I] Injection (Diagnostic) (Radiopharmaceutical) (PI)

Indicated for use in diagnostic scintigraphic localisation of phaeochromocytomas, paragangliomas (Chemodectomas), ganglioneuroblastomas and ganglioneuromas.

Also used for the detection, staging and follow-up on therapy and neuroblastomas.

Samarium [153Sm] EDTMP (Quadramet) (Radiopharmaceutical) (PI)

Quadramet is indicated for the relief of bone pain in patients with painful osteoblastic skeletal metastases as indicated by positive bone scan. The presence of bone metastases should be confirmed prior to therapy.

Palliative treatment for secondary bone cancer from breast and prostate cancers.

Sodium Iodide [125I] Hydroxide Solution (Radiochemical)

Iodine[125I] is a radioisotope of iodine which has uses in biological assays and in radiation therapy to treat prostate cancer and brain tumours.  Its half-life is around 60 days and it emits gamma-rays with maximum energies of 35 keV, some of which are internally converted to x-rays. Because of the synthetic production route of Iodine 125 and its half-life, the natural abundance is effectively 0%.

Usage in Australia

  • Used in Endocrinology Depts for proteiniodination used for radioimmunoassay (RAI) testing and also in insulin antiobodies.
  • The technique of radioimmunoassay has revolutionized research and clinical practice in many areas including blood banking and diagnosis of allergies.
  • The technique is both extremely sensitive and specific, but it requires special precautions (because radioactive substances are used and therefore hospitals need fresh stocks) and sophisticated apparatus.
  • Clinicians are testing patients with very low levels of hormones. The precise measurement of minute amounts of such a hormone was a key event in endocrinology.

Sodium Iodide [123I] Solution (Radiochemical)

Thyroid Scan

Thyroid disorders

Thyroid disorders, thyroid uptake and labelling of biological compounds.  Half-life: 13.2 hrs

Sodium Iodide (131I) Capsules and Solution BP (for therapy)(Radiopharmaceutical) (PI)

Sodium Iodide (131I) Capsules and Solution BP (for therapy) is indicated in the treatment of hyperthyroidism, and the detection and ablation of residual functioning thyroid tissue in differentiated thyroid carcinoma.

Thallium 201 (Radiopharmaceutical) (PI)

Thallium Scan

Thallium scan showing cold spots in heart

Thallous chloride (201Tl) may be useful in myocardial perfusion imaging for the diagnosis and localization of myocardial infarction.

It may also be useful in conjunction with exercise stress testing as an adjunct in the diagnosis of ischaemic heart disease (atherosclerotic coronary artery disease).

Thallium 201 is used for myocardial perfusion imaging.  Half-Life: 3.04 days
