A new 4K-300K refrigerator (indicated by the arrow) was purchased in late 2006 to replace the older CF-7 Heliplex cryofridge. It will mainly be used in conjunction with the VM-1 7.4T Green magnet. Samples are mounted via 4x M3 tapped holes on a 25.4mm diameter PCD

The heliplex closed-cycle refrigerator can reach temperatures down to 5K, by use of a Joule-Thomson expansion stage, in addition to the normal closed-cycle helium refrigerator. It can operate at all other Temperatures up to room temperature, though one would normally only use this device for experiments that need temperatures below 15K.

In the photograph, the sample is mounted within the cylindrical aluminium-alloy tails at the bottom. These tails contain thin windows and the sample is centred in the middle of the neutron beam with the cold head protruding from the top of the instrument.
