Environmental researchers in the field

More than 1100 people are currently employed by ANSTO. Of these, around one third are involved in scientific research across areas as diverse as materials, health, climate change, mining and engineering.

ANSTO has provided employment to the local community for decades and offers a diverse range of career opportunities, from science to engineering and business development. Staff are supported with development opportunities crafted over many years. The organisation aims to attract highly-skilled individuals who work collaboratively, with professionalism and integrity.

Careers in science

Almost every scientific discipline is represented within ANSTO, and scientists are supported with leading-edge facilities and instruments. They are encouraged to collaborate with their peers, gaining skills and knowledge transferable to an array of scientific areas. Those choosing to specialise in nuclear science may choose to work in any of the following areas:

Environmental science. ANSTO is an international leader in applying nuclear science to environmental and climate change research. See: The Institute for Environmental Research.

Materials and engineering science. ANSTO is a major centre of materials science expertise in Australia with a multidisciplinary team of ceramicists, metallurgists, physicists, chemists, engineers and earth scientists. See: The Institute of Materials Engineering.

Neutron scattering. The Bragg Institute leads Australia in the use of neutron scattering and X-ray techniques to solve complex research and industrial problems in many important fields. See: Bragg Institute.

Radiopharmaceutical production and research. Apart from supplying radioisotopes for nuclear medicines, ANSTO also undertakes the research and development of new and novel compounds to assist in the detection of a range of diseases, and to assess the efficacy of treatment. See: Radiopharmeceutical Research Institute.

Safety and radiation services. ANSTO is Australia's leading adviser on radiation safety issues, including training and the safety assessment of workplaces and projects. See: Radiation Safety Services.

Other career opportunities

A large workforce is needed to support ANSTO’s research, maintain the instruments, build relationships with partners, and look after the organisation’s 70-hectare campus. So, apart from employing scientists, ANSTO hires engineers, technical assistants, education officers, communications specialists, HR and government liaison staff, business development experts, accountants, IT specialists, maintenance workers, administrative staff and stores managers (see positions vacant – below).

ANSTO also offers development opportunities for apprentices, trainees, graduates and post doctorates. For more information, see Pathways.
