Dr Cathy Harland completed her BEng (I) at the University of Wollongong in 1995.  She worked for BHP Research for 2 years before returning to study and completed her PhD on rare earth ? iron ? boron (REFeB) based hard magnetic alloys at the University of Sheffield, UK, in 2000.

Cathy then went on to a post doctoral position at Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York, working on the synthesis and analysis of bulk exchange bias materials and nanocomposite REFeB based alloys.  During this time she also worked for the American Physical Society as a senior editorial assistant for Physical Review B.  Cathy has been the ASRP beamline scientist at XOR at the Advanced Photon Source since March 2003.  Her current interests include rare-earth based magnetic and rapidly solidified alloys studied using polarized synchrotron radiation techniques.
