Dr Shane Kennedy's responsibilities lie primarily in scientific infrastructure development for the OPAL reactor. He is project leader of the Neutron Beam Instrument Project, with responsibility for building eight world leading neutron beam instruments at OPAL at a cost of $35 M, by early 2007. He is also responsible for coordinating Bragg Institute contributions to the Replacement Research Reactor Project, including design, manufacturing, installation and commissioning of neutron-beam facilities and neutron-beam transport systems
His expertise includes neutron beam instrumentation, neutron scattering techniques, powder diffraction, polarization analysis, hard-condensed matter physics
He spent 3 years at the Imperial College of Science and Technology, London, before accepting a position with the Australian Institute of Nuclear Science and Engineering to build and operate neutron beam instruments for powder diffraction and polarization analysis. In 1993 Shane transferred to the ANSTO neutron scattering team. He has 23 years experience in the application of neutron scattering techniques, to condensed matter research in Australia and overseas (principally in Europe and Japan).
