Rapid Heat Quench Cell for SANS (-140ºC to 360ºC)RHQC.jpg

Ancilliary Code: R-1

Used On:

Quokka  (SANS)

A rapid heat and quench cell has been designed in-house to allow samples to be heated and quenched at up to 20C/sec. The cells are heated and cooled using nitrogen gas; samples are enclosed in standard SANS quartz cuvettes.

Key Features:

  • Enables both rapid heating and quenching of materials between 430°C and minus 150°C;
  • Incorporates dual chamber design which enables independent thermostatic control;
  • Provides reliability and repeatability of operation;

This innovative design was a finalist in the Engineers Australia 2008 Engineering Excellence Awards - Inventions and Innovation Category. A reference to the device is in Meas. Sci. Technol. 19 (2008) 065707 (8pp) doi:10.1088/0957-0233/19/6/065707

The RHQC is shown above with the dual measuring chambers and the sample cuvette located between them. The temperatures of each chamber are controlled independently of each other by providing a temperature controlled gas flow to each via the inlet tubes located towards the top of the chamber. The sample is moved pneumatically via the piston to the right of the image.”
