LifeSciences project management

ANSTO LifeSciences is creating opportunities for researchers to work with ANSTO's world-class facilities, staff and equipment on projects that match ANSTO's capabilities, aims and methodologies.

Projects with ANSTO LifeSciences

Researchers from the broad research community are invited to approach ANSTO LifeSciences with projects that would benefit from being carried out in collaboration with us, using our capabilities and facilities. We provide below a flowchart that illustrates the process and a detailed step-by-step project application workflow.

Project application workflow

Step 1: Submitting an Expression of Interest

The Researcher will need to prepare a short document (not more than two pages) called an Expression of Interest (EOI) outlining the following:

  1. Project rationale and aims
  2. ANSTO capabilities which the project would rely on
  3. Researchers background and current activities (nb: please include your contact details).

How to submit your EOI

Your two page EOI document should be submitted via ANSTO's Sharefile service to the username: lifesciences_research_office during the designated 'call for EOI's' time period. Sharefile has a usage guide to assist you in uploading and sending your documents.

Step 2: Expression of Interest screening

At the end of the designated EOI time period, a management committee will study all the EOI's and will appoint an appropriate Champion for each one.
The Champion will be a senior research fellow who has a deep knowledge of one of the main capabilities that are included in the EOI.

The role of the Champion is to advise the Researcher, if required, on ways to achieve the best scientific outcome from our collaborative work (for example, choice of methods or instruments, experimental design, etc.). The Champion will be able to collect information and advice from other members of the LifeSciences team if needed.

Both Researcher and Champion will work towards writing and submitting a detailed description of the project (Guidelines).

Step 3: Submitting a detailed project proposal: Submissions are now open

During the designated 'Call for Proposals' time period, the Researcher will lodge their detailed project application with LifeSciences.

Project applications should be submitted attached to an email to the username: lifesciences_research_office at ansto.gov.au during the designated time period. For documents over 2 MB, you should use ANSTO's Sharefile service. Sharefile has a usage guide to assist you in uploading and sending your documents. Please ensure that your documents are clearly labelled with your name and affiliation/s.

If you have any questions or need more information, please email lifesciences_research_office at ansto.gov.au.

Step 4: Project evaluation process

The evaluation process is aimed at ensuring each project is given the best chances to achieve a great scientific outcome. This process will rely on a panel of experts which will:

  1. Provide scientific advice on the project goals
  2. Assess the technical feasibility of the project
  3. Evaluate the resources (equipment, workforce, timelines, etc.) required to achieve the projects goals
  4. Check any issues regarding animal wellbeing
  5. Advise on any business development aspects of the project

The panel will issue written information for each project using these five guidelines. Based on these documents, the Strategic Committee will study each project and either give a refusal, a conditional approval (requiring negotiation of resources, workforce or timelines), or a straight approval. The Strategic Committee will then, in agreement with the Researcher and the Champion, appoint a Project Co-ordinator.

Step 5: Project life

The Project Co-ordinator will organise, schedule and execute the project, in collaboration with all the parties. The Project Co-ordinator will also prepare the reports for the quarterly project review process, ensuring that the project scope, timelines and resources are in line with the agreement.
