Dr Ron Nelson is an advisor assisting in managing the Bragg Institute computing and electronics group. He provides management support to the group including recruitment and training, implementing software quality systems, scientific computing and eScience, computing technology selection, current and future collaborations e.g. SICS, Gumtree, DANSE, NeXus etc, as well as maximising the return on investment in computer systems and software to ANSTO and the neutron scattering community.

Qualifications and achievements:

  • Experimental area manager for operations at the Manuel Lujan Jr. Neutron Scattering Center at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Responsible for the coordination with accelerator operations, support groups, and scientists, schedule, safety, work controls, and productivity of the neutron scattering program (2002-2005)
  • Deputy Group Leader for the Lujan Center in charge of technical work ranging from electronics and computer software to mechanical design and shop fabrication (2002-2005)
  • Leader of multi-disciplinary team responsible for detector electronics, data acquisition hardware, software, network, CAD, office desktop systems, and system management (1983-2002)
  • Developed data analysis software at ILL (1982-1983)
  • Participated in the specification, evaluation, and procurement of commercial systems as well as the design, implementation, testing, and documentation of custom data acquisition hardware and software subsystems at the spallation source in Los Alamos (1974-1982)
  • Ph.D. in Nuclear Physics from Duke University in 1971
