ANSTO is located 40 km south-west of the Sydney CBD and can be referenced in Sydney street directories, Whereis or Google Maps will show the location of Lucas Heights.

 

On arrival at ANSTO (after turning off New Illawarra Road), visitors should proceed to Reception by following the road after turning right at the top of the small hill.

 

If you are coming to ANSTO for a booked tour, turn left into the car park, then proceed to the Visitor Centre.

 


 

Directions

 

From Sydney

A typical car journey from the CBD will take around 45 minutes.

Take the M5 East (toll required) to Fairford Road. Turn left into Fairford Road and follow south to Alford's Point Road (Route 6). Continue straight until arrival at ANSTO (on the left).


Alternatively follow the Princes Highway through Newtown, south to Sutherland. At Sutherland, turn right off the highway into Linden Street. Over the railway, this becomes the Bangor bypass.

 

At the very end of the bypass turn left into New Illawarra Road. Continue straight until arrival at ANSTO (on the left).

 

From Sydney airport

Take the M5 East (toll required) to Fairford Road. Turn left into Fairford Road and follow south to Alfords Point Road (Route 6). Continue straight until arrival at ANSTO (on the left).


Alternatively follow signposts to the Princes Highway (Wollongong direction). At Heathcote, turn right into Heathcote Road, and right again at New Illawarra Road.

 

Continue straight until arrival at ANSTO (on the right). 

 

From Newcastle, the Blue Mountains, Northern or Western Suburbs

 

At Bankstown, turn off Hume Highway into Stacey Street and follow to Alfords Point Road. Continue straight until arrival at ANSTO (on the left).
From WollongongTake the Princes Highway to Engadine, then turn left into Heathcote Road. Turn right into New Illawarra Road. Continue straight until arrival at ANSTO (on the right).
 
From Canberra

Take the Hume Highway to Liverpool. Turn right onto the South Western Freeway and then right again into Heathcote Road.

 

Turn left into New Illawarra Road. Continue straight until arrival at ANSTO (on the right).

 

From Melbourne

Take the Hume Highway to Liverpool. Follow the signs to Sydney until you are past Liverpool. Do not turn off the road to Sydney to to Old Hume Highway or Hume Highway.

 

Instead, take the turn off for Heathcote Road (an exit left, followed by a right-hand turn at the lights to cross the freeway).

 

Follow Heathcote Road for around 8km before turning left onto New Illawarra Road (Route 6) towards Bankstown and Menai.

 

ANSTO is clearly signposted on the right, approximately one kilometre from the turnoff.


 

Reception and parking

 

If you are visiting ANSTO for business or research purposes, you will need to go to reception, located 700 metres along the road to the right of the main turnoff from New Illawarra Road.

 

If you are coming to ANSTO for a booked tour, you will need to go to the Visitor's Centre. Turn left for parking before proceeding to the centre, which is clearly signposted.

 

If you are visiting AINSE or arriving at the motel or cafe, take the first road on your left and park in the available carparks. AINSE and the motel are clearly signposted; the cafe is the semi-domed building with outdoor seating.

 

Parking

 

Ample parking is available for all visitors. Allocated bus bays can be found at the Visitor's Centre.
