About ANSTO Health
One of ANSTO's core missions, as a Federal Government agency, is to manufacture and advance the use of radiopharmaceuticals which will improve the health of Australians.
Through its TGA-licensed facilities ANSTO Health supplies more than 85 per cent of the annual diagnostic nuclear medicine procedures in Australia, through more than 220 nuclear medicine centres. All products are manufactured in 'clean rooms' by strict quality assurance and control programs which comply with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP).
Many of these products are delivered in Gentech® generators; ingenious ANSTO-designed technetium-99m radiopharmaceutical generators that have become a mainstay of nuclear medicine in Australia. These generators also ensure the safe and reliable delivery of diagnostic radioisotopes to New Zealand and countries in South East Asia.
Apart from producing molybdenum-99 (the parent isotope of the most commonly used radioisotope, technetium-99m), ANSTO Health produces large quantities of different isotopes, including iodine-131 which is used to treat hyperthyroidism and in the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid cancer.
