Managing the return of reprocessed fuel from France

In line with both international best practice and agreements made in the 1990s, Australian spent fuel was reprocessed in France. The reprocessed fuel was obliged to return to Australia in 2015 for safe storage.

As the leader in nuclear science and research in Australia, ANSTO was asked by the Commonwealth Government to site, store and manage the return of reprocessed waste until the National Radioactive Waste Management Facility is in place. ANSTO has applied to the ARPANSA for licences to construct and operate an interim waste store.
