ANSTO Nuclear-based science benefitting all Australians
Research Hub

ANSTO's research capabilities, led by the OPAL nuclear research reactor and associated instruments provide access to users investigating areas as diverse as materials, life sciences, climate change and mining/engineering.

Training

All persons who will be working or conducting experiments at the Bragg Institute must undertake induction training. This training will familiarise you with the facility and important safety concepts. Training is conducted in two parts, on-line training modules and on-site induction tours.

All persons must complete the mandatory training, further training may be required depending on the work you will be conducting. Security access to the Bragg Institute buildings is contingent on successful completion of mandatory training. Persons who have not completed training must be accompanied by a Bragg Institute staff member at all times.

Mandatory training

On-line training modules

On-line mandatory training consists of 4 separate presentations with short exams conducted via the Bragg Institute Online Training website. These cover safety and operational topics relevent to ANSTO and the Bragg Institute. This training should take around 1 hour and should be completed at least a day before your arrival at ANSTO.

Exams are from a pool of questions and the pass mark is 80%. In the event of a mark below this you will be required to resit the presentation and the exam. Your login details will be sent to you by the Bragg Institute User Office.

On-site induction tour

When you arrive at the Bragg Institute you will need to complete an induction tour before you can begin any work or experiments. This tour will familiarise you with the Bragg Institute facility, emergency and safety systems and radiation safety equipment.

Completion of this tour, along with the mandatory on-line training modules, will allow you security access to the building using your photo ID. The induction tour involves a walk around the facility and takes aboout 30 minutes.

The tour proceeds through areas that require enclosed shoes. Please ensure you are wearing enclosed shoes that cover the foot completely.

Additional training requirements

Researchers/Users

All researchers/users must complete additional training and induction tours before experiments or experiment preparation can being. The additional training consists of on-line training modules in neutron beam instrument safety and laboratory safety, and an on-site induction tour of the laboratories.

You will also undertake on-site induction training specific to the instrument/s in your proposal, this is conducted by the instrument scientists. After completion of these training modules and tours you will become an approved user of the relevent areas. For example, any person wishing to work in the Bragg Institute Laboratories must be an approved laboratory user before they can begin work.

Approved user lists for laboratories, neutron beam instruments and other equipment/instrumentation are placed at the entrance to the rooms or on the equipment. These lists are updated daily, persons not on these lists are not authorised to do any work.

Researchers/users who will be handling cryogenic liquids must also successfully complete a Cryogenics and Compressed Gases on-line training module and induction training.

Contractors

All contractors who are conducting construction, installation or repair work at ANSTO must undertake Contractor Safety Training in addition to the mandatory training described above. This training covers the safety systems, such as safe work permits, that apply to contractors.

The training consists of watching a contractor safety video on arrival at ANSTO and answering a simple quiz on the video content. This takes 15 to 20 minutes and can be completed the day before by prior arrangement with your Contractor Supervisor. You will also be given a Contractor's Safety Handbook.
