ANSTO's research capabilities, led by the OPAL nuclear research reactor and associated instruments provide access to users investigating areas as diverse as materials, life sciences, climate change and mining/engineering.
Transport to ANSTO
ANSTO is located 40 km south-west of the Sydney CBD and can be referenced in Sydney street directories, Whereis or Google Maps will show the location of Lucas Heights.
On arrival at ANSTO (after turning off New Illawarra Road) visitors should proceed to Reception by following the road after turning right at the top of the small hill.
By plane (to Sydney)
Sydney airport is the only international airport in New South Wales. Clicking on the link to Sydney airport will lead you to the official site which contains information on international and domestic terminals, maps of the airport, security procedures, flight information, times and more.
Australian customs places restrictions on plant and animal goods entering and leaving Australia. If you are unsure declare all animal and plant materials to customs, Australia has a fragile ecosystem that needs to be protected. Please note there are new rules for taking liquids, aerosols and gels on flights.
By train (in Sydney area)
Our closest train stations are Sutherland and Engadine station. You can plan your trip by public transport using the trip planner. Or view the CityRail train route map. It is important to note that all inner city bus routes and trains are controlled by Sydney Busses and CityRail, whereas in outer city regions local bus services are run by private companies. Thus the trip planner can only be used for Sydney Buses and CityRail services, in addition there is no combined fare for local buses and CityRail services.
Train and Bus fares are bought as one-way tickets for short trips and return train tickets must be used on the day of purchase. There is also other travel pass options, please see the Cityrail fares web page for more detail.
From Sydney airport by train
From Sydney airport via train, catch the Town Hall to Macarthur via Airport line (from Domestic or International Station) to Wolli Creek Station, see the train timetable (Town Hall to Macaurthur via Airport).
From Wolli Creek change for the Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra line, see the Train Timetable (Sydney to Sutherland).
Alight at Sutherland, or Engadine station to catch a bus to ANSTO (see the By bus section for ANSTO bus services). Otherwise catch a taxi from Flora Street, Sutherland or Station Street, Engadine. The local taxi company is St George Cabs 13 21 66 (24 hours).

Note: All trains to and from the Airport are via the Airport & East Hills line. If the train is East Hills only and goes via Sydenham it does not go via the airport stations!
By bus (in Sydney area)
There are two bus services provided by the local bus company Veolia, to and from ANSTO. One bus service operates to ANSTO in the morning and from ANSTO in the afternoon on weekdays only. ANSTO has recently introduced a regular and direct mini-bus service between ANSTO and Sutherland railway station which is intended primarily for visitors coming to ANSTO. By car or taxi
Be aware of Sydney tolls when driving, the Roads and Traffic Authority provide a list of roads that charge a toll. For driving tips in Australia see the Roads and Traffic Authority website.
Users with ANSTO passes are allowed to bring their cars onsite and have to register their car with reception first. See the before and upon arrival section.
Cars can be hired at Sydney airport as well as locally. For a listing of car hire companies search the Yellow Pages online.
From Sydney Airport by car or taxi
Generally around peak time, 4.30-5.30pm weekdays, there is very heavy traffic from the Airport to ANSTO. You can check the local Roads and Traffic Authority website for updates on current traffic conditions and any road works that may be occurring. ANSTO is in the Sydney South-West/ South region and Sydney airport is in the east/ inner west region.
A taxi from the airport to ANSTO generally costs between $AU40-$AU50 depending on the time of day and the traffic. Taxis accept credit cards and cash. Taxis are not permitted onsite but they can drop you off at the visitors centre. Call 131 008 for a taxi (Australia wide booking service).
There are two main routes, along the M5 Motorway or along the Princess Highway. You can plan your route by using the online service whereis.com.au
