Before Arrival

Before your arrival at ANSTO

In order to conduct experiments you will need to:

  • Obtain an ANSTO security pass
  • Indicate all scientists who will participate in the experiment in the web portal database
  • Follow on-line training and pass exam
  • Follow on-site training on arrival

Please check the following details:

1. Security Information

If you do not have an ANSTO security pass, please contact the Bragg Institute User Office and request the ANSTO general access form. Phone +61 2 9717 7276, or email the Bragg Institute User Office. 2. Training

To ensure your safety while you are working at the Bragg Institute and inform you on relevant ANSTO procedures you will be required to undertake a training program before and upon your arrival at the Bragg Institute. This training is valid for 3 years.

The training program consists of on-line training content relating to safety and operational topics with short assessments and onsite induction. The training must be completed successfully before you arrive. (Link will be sent to you after reception of your completed security papers). The following on-line training modules are available on the Bragg Institute Customer Portal:

  • Working Arrangements at ANSTO Mandatory (takes 20-30 min; 4 exam questions)
  • Emergency Response Mandatory (takes 20-30 min; 7 exam questions)
  • Radiation Safety Mandatory (takes 30-40 min; 8 exam questions)
  • General Safety at the Bragg Institute Mandatory (takes 20-30 min; 4 exam questions)
  • Laboratory Safety Mandatory (takes 20-30 min; 10 exam questions)

The following training will be conducted on arrival:

  • Cryogenics and Compressed Gases - only required if use of cryogenic equipments
  • Neutron Beam Instrument Safety - conducted on arrival

NOTE that on arrival you will have to follow on-site induction training and sign a user agreement before you will get access to the neutron-guide hall.

3. Scientists participating in experiment (experimentalists)

If you are the principal experimenter you are requested to check that all scientists involved in your experiment have a security pass and have been declared at least 48 hours in advance. Failure to do so may result in refusal of entry for undeclared persons. Fill out the Bragg Institute Visitor form for each member of your party.

4. Organising your samples and experimental needs

All samples and any other chemicals you are bringing must be added to your proposal via the Bragg Institute Customer Portal 6 weeks in advance. This allows time for an ANSTO approved MSDS to be created if none exists. Note that all chemical compounds being brought to the facility must have an MSDS.

Inquiries about the National Deuteration Facility should be directed to Dr. Peter Holden.

5. Arrange travel and accommodation:

6. Information for Overseas Visitors:

International users can no longer use the Business ETA visa and we suggest you obtain a Subclass 400 visa to come to ANSTO and attend your experiment(s),
as explained below.

Please note that on 23 March 2013, the Australian Government changed the conditions on the Business ETA visa to allow a person to undertake the following activities (undertaking of  business enquiries and contractual negotiations, and attending conferences).  The ETA specifically notes: "Business visitor activities do not include work. If you want to do short-term, highly specialised, non-ongoing work in Australia, you can apply for a Temporary Work (Short Stay Activity) visa (Subclass 400)."

The Subclass 400 visa has replaced the visa Subclasses below. If you already hold one of these visas for your visit, it will still be valid until the date you were given when it was granted:

  • Business (Short Stay) visa (subclass 456)
  • Sponsored Business Visitor (Short Stay) visa (subclass 459)
  • Electronic Travel Authority (Business Entrant—Short Validity) (subclass 977)
  • Electronic Travel Authority (Business Entrant—Long Validity) (subclass 956)
  • eVisitor visa (subclass 651).
