ANSTO's research capabilities, led by the OPAL nuclear research reactor and associated instruments provide access to users investigating areas as diverse as materials, life sciences, climate change and mining/engineering.

Tourist Information

 

The ANSTO site is quite isolated. However it is serviced by two bus services provided by the local bus company Veolia, to and from ANSTO. One bus service operates to ANSTO in the morning and from ANSTO in the afternoon on weekdays only.

 

ANSTO has recently introduced a regular and direct mini-bus service between ANSTO and Sutherland railway station which is intended primarily for visitors coming to ANSTO.

For prolonged periods of stay it may be a good idea to hire a car or make friends with people who have a car. Note that there is no Automatic Tellar Machine (ATM or money machine) available.

 


 

Local area


Cronulla is approximately 30 minutes by car. Cronulla is famous for Cronulla beach. See Tourism NSW website on Cronulla or www.cronullacoast.com.au/

 

Engadine, Menai, Miranda and Sutherland are all approximately 10-20 minutes by car and have restaurants, supermarkets and shops and public transport. Menai shopping centre is convenient during your lunch break. Miranda has a large shopping centre, cinemas, restaurants. See The Shire - Sydney at its best

Sydney CBD (Central Business District)


ANSTO is approximately 30-40 mins by car from the city, no ANSTO bus services run on the weekends.

Blue Mountains: There are bus tours run from Central Station in Sydney to the Blue Mountains and you can also drive there.

 

Hunter Valley: The Hunter Valley is one of NSW favourite wine producing regions. Bus tours run from Central Station in Sydney as well as a host of other tour options.

 

National Parks (close to ANSTO): Heathcote National Park, Royal National Park and Botany Bay National Park.

 

North Coast NSW
