ANSTO Nuclear-based science benefitting all Australians
Research Hub

ANSTO's research capabilities, led by the OPAL nuclear research reactor and associated instruments provide access to users investigating areas as diverse as materials, life sciences, climate change and mining/engineering.

Ion Beam Analysis (IBA) Publications

The Ion Beam Analysis (IBA) group has published in a broad range of scientific areas.

Click on the links below for a list of the most recent publications:

Other publications can be found at the key publications archive, including downloadable PDF files.

The Aerosol Sampling Program (ASP) has been running for almost 20 years. Aerosol samples are routinely collected in a number of Australian sites as well as within Asia. Samples are analysed by means of IBA techniques and results interpreted and reported.

ASP Newsletters

Aerosol Sampling Program (ASP) Newsletters are published regularly to keep interested parties up to date with recent analyses and results. Each newsletter focuses on specific data from selected sites around Australia. Some recent Newsletters can be viewed/downloaded as PDF files by following the links below. To receive your own copy of the ASP Newsletter contact Dr David Cohen.

Earlier issues of the newsletter are available upon request.

ASP Monthly Summary Sheets

The data in the ASP monthly summary sheets below was obtained in collaboration with many different organisations, including significant financial support from Muswellbrook Shire Council, Botany Bay City Council, Newcastle City Council, Bluescope Steel and The University of Western Sydney.

NEW Online Data Collection

A significant portion of our aerosol data for a number of sampling sites has now been made available online through the ANSTO data repository. These data sets have also been added to the Australian National Data Service (ANDS).

Regional Cooperative Agreement (RCA) across Asia

ANSTO has also been involved in the Asia-Pacific Aerosol Database (A-PAD) project as part of the Regional Co-operative Agreement (RCA) under the International Atomic Agency (IAEA).

Visible atmospheric haze is a major problem for many countries in the Asia region. Identifying the contributing sources of this haze is the first critical step towards developing strategies for reducing or eliminating this pollution. A-PAD is the result of a successful 14 country particulate matter project involving weekly (or biweekly) PM2.5 (fine) and PM10 sampling for a 24 hour period spanning 10 years (2000-2010).

The 14 countries included Australia, Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Mongolia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam.

Already data collected by the atmospheric science experts is proving to be an invaluable resource for developing new air pollution models and pollution reduction strategies based on better quantification of local source contributors as well as the influence of sources long range transport on the particle concentrations at a site. A subset of this database has now been released online and is available at: http://www.rcaro.org
