ANSTO's research capabilities, led by the OPAL nuclear research reactor and associated instruments provide access to users investigating areas as diverse as materials, life sciences, climate change and mining/engineering.
LifeSciences Model
ANSTO LifeSciences works to improve our methodologies to increase our understanding and to enhance the quality of our capabilities. Our strategic work focusses on the development of our capabilities and expertise.
ANSTO LifeSciences' expertise and capabilities are shared with other researchers in collaborations and partnerships, applying our unique resources to help answer their questions.
Since our work is often interdisciplinary and requires flexibility, ANSTO LifeSciences is both team-based and project-based. We recognise our scientists’ skills and expertise and ask them to apply their abilities collegially, sharing with fellow scientists in LifeSciences, across ANSTO, across Australia and ultimately, across the world. This is ANSTO LifeSciences' key strength: co-operative flexibility.
ANSTO LifeSciences focuses its work in two themes and within each theme are two programmes:
The impact of environment on health
- Monitoring biological pathways
- Radiolabelled probes for diagnosis and therapy
The interactions of radiation with living matter
- Biological responses to radiation
- Precision dose delivery and measurement

Research at LifeSciences originates from three main sources: from within ANSTO, from the needs of collaborators, and from the needs of Australia's public and business community.

All LifeSciences' research projects are initiated through the LifeSciences portal. Before starting, all project proposals are considered by review teams in terms of:
- The scientific goals of the proposal
- The proposal’s alignment with ANSTO LifeSciences' goals and objectives
- The technical feasibility of the proposal
- The resources required to achieve the proposal goals
- The expected role to be played by ANSTO LifeSciences
- Any issues regarding animal wellbeing
- Any business development aspects of the proposal
- The anticipated risks to ANSTO LifeSciences as a result of participating in the project
