ANSTO's research capabilities, led by the OPAL nuclear research reactor and associated instruments provide access to users investigating areas as diverse as materials, life sciences, climate change and mining/engineering.

ANSTO LifeSciences
ANSTO LifeSciences maintains the following accreditations and licences:
- ISO 9001: 2008 Quality management system
- ISO 14001: 2004 Environmental management systems (as part of the ANSTO site-wide licence)
- ARPANSA Licences for the safe operation of radiation facilities
Radiation Technology
In addition to the accreditations and licences held by ANSTO LifeSciences, ANSTO Radiation Technology also complies with the following licences, standards and guidelines:
- TGA Licence 1182 for the radiation treament of therapeutic goods
- AQIS Licence N0099 for the radiation treatment of goods subject to Australian quarantine
- ISO 13485: 2003 regulatory requirements for the control of radiation processing of medical devices
Radiation Technology also adheres to the principles of the following standards and guidelines:
- ISO 11137 Substantiation of the sterilising dose for medical devices
- ISO 17025 and ISO/ASTM International best practice for dosimetry in radiation processing
