Data Analysis

Data Analysis

Data analysis is supported through user training which is provided at the AINSE Neutron Scattering Winter School (

Data analysis for Platypus can be carried out with Motofit ( which contains macros developed by ANSTO. It is a powerful package that aids the simultaneous least squares fitting of multiple-contrast specular X-ray and neutron reflectivity data, using an Abeles Matrix formalism or Parratts recursion formula. Motofit provides robust and fast optimisation, with a choice between Genetic Optimization (Differential Evolution) and Levenberg-Marquardt. The aim is to provide maximal functionality, with easiest interaction. Limit the time between collection and publication.

Motofit requires Igor Pro from WaveMetrics ( A trial version is available which allows the free use of Igor Pro for 30 days.

Data Correction and Reduction

Data correction and reduction is provided by the Platypus instrument scientists, but if desired users are able to perform this task with SLIM macros. This package is developed by ANSTO and can be found together with Motofit at

Data Access

The Bragg Institute promotes access to data collected during scientific experiments. See

Access to data is available at ANSTO during the 3 year embargo period via the following options:

If you are unable to login, contact the Bragg Institute User Office

It is ANSTO policy that after a 3 year embargo period, data becomes publicly accessible. This can be viewed as "Public Experiments" at Metadata relating to the experimental data is copied to Research Data Australia In encouraging this practice ANSTO has helped many researchers forge new collaborations.
