Role at ANSTO


Dr Hotchkis leads research tasks investigating new methods of mass spectrometry and developing applications of Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS). Two new methods of mass spectrometry are under development exploiting the features of an ECR ion source built at ANSTO. These methods aim to provide high efficiency techniques for radiocarbon detection and for measuring isotopic ratios of stable isotopes of light elements. Dr Hotchkis is also developing and applying AMS to analyse actinides at extremely low levels in environmental samples. Isotopic analyses of actinides are performed in support of nuclear safeguards and for other research projects.

Qualifications & Achievements


  • Achieved proof-of-principle for two new methods of mass spectrometry (2004-2007)
  • Responsible for qualification of ANSTO's AMS facility for membership of the IAEA's Network of Analytical Laboratories for nuclear safeguards (2002)
  • Led the development of AMS for heavy element isotopic analysis (from 1996)
  • Key role in establishing AMS at ANSTO for radiocarbon and other long-lived radiosiotopes (from 1992)
  • Ten years research experience in nuclear structure physics, focussed on the structure of exotic nuclei
  • Publication of more than 50 refereed research articles in international journals.
