Instrument Scientist

Dr Mark Reid is co-responsible for the KOWARI Strain Scanner. He has joined the Australian Centre for Neutron Scattering, having previously worked as a post-doctoral research fellow at the University of Wollongong, within the Materials Process Engineering group. His main research activities involve residual-stress analysis and texture measurement using neutron diffraction. In addition he has a strong interest in neutron imaging and in-situ neutron diffraction of material processes such as thermo-mechanical processing, sintering and welding.

During his post-doctoral research fellowship at the University of Wollongong, his responsibilities included management of a high-temperature microscopy facility, operation of and training on the University’s suite of electron microscopes and supervision of graduate and post-graduate thesis students. While working at the University, Mark was involved in a wide range of projects across the materials-engineering spectrum. Some highlights include: the development of low manganese steel; understanding the peritectic transformation in ferrous alloys; inclusion dissolution in steel-making slags; in-situ observation of the reduction of titanium ores and development of a laboratory-grade metallurgical coke for studying reactivity effects. Mark completed his PhD in 2012 at the University of Wollongong, and his research topic was on the hardening and embrittlement of aluminium-containing ferritic stainless steels through spinodal decomposition at 475ºC.
