Dr Nageshwar Rao Yepuri
Deuteration Research Facility Chemist. National Deuteration Facility
Rao graduated with BSc(chemistry), B.Pharm, M.Pharm (Pharmaceutical Chemistry) and then PhD in Organic Synthesis from University of Wollongong, NSW, Australia. Following his Masters, in 1995 he joined the Dr Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd, Hyderabad, India as a chemist working on projects in the area of drug discovery and medicinal chemistry. Then for 3 years (1997-2001) he held a Senior Chemist position in the Dr Reddy’s Labs Discovery Chemistry. He moved to Australia in 2001 for PhD under IPRS and UPA fellowships. Following his PhD, in 2004 he joined the Johnson & Johnson Research Pharmaceutical Research Laboratory (JJRPRL), as an Associate Research Fellow working on projects in the area of medicinal chemistry. Then for 3 years held a Research Fellow and Senior Research fellow (2006-2009) position in the Johnson & Johnson Research Pharmaceutical Research Laboratory (JJRPRL) housed in School of Chemistry, University of Wollongong (UOW). While at UOW he also involved in synthetic chemistry and natural products chemistry projects.

2010-2012: Worked as a Research Fellow for short time at IPRI and School of Chemistry, University of Wollongong working on Derivatisation of graphene and medicinal chemistry antibacterial projects.

In March 2012, Rao was appointed as a Research Chemist in the National Deuteration Facility/ Bragg Institute/ANSTO, NSW, Australia.

Role at ANSTO

Rao is a synthetic research chemist in the Chemical Deuteration team at the National Deuteration Facility (NDF) at ANSTO. His research involves design and synthesis of functional deuterated biomaterials for neutron scattering, NMR and other spectroscopic studies. He is also interested in the development of new methodologies for synthesis of deuterium labelled organic compounds such as branched chain fatty acids, saturated, unsaturated fatty acids and deuterated drugs. He has strong background in synthetic organic chemistry and has had a wide array of experience in fields of medicinal chemistry/ organometallic chemistry and characterisation.

Expertise

Organic synthesis/ organometallic synthesis, drug design and synthesis, characterisation by 2D NMR, microwave and parallel synthesis.
