ANSTO's general purpose is prescribed by the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation Act 1987 and translated into action through corporate drivers of vision, mission and strategic goals.

ANSTO is responsible for delivering specialised advice, scientific services and products to government, industry, academia and other research organisations. It does so through the development of new knowledge, delivery of quality services and support for business opportunities.

ANSTO is an agency within the portfolio of the Commonwealth Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research. The Chief Executive Officer, Dr Adi Paterson, is responsible to the ANSTO Board, chaired by Dr Ziggy Switkowski. The Board is appointed by the Governor-General and comprises up to eight other members. Approximately 950 people work at ANSTO, whose main campus is located at Lucas Heights,
south of Sydney.

ANSTO executive

The ANSTO Executive comprises the Chief Executive Officer, plus the Business and Enterprise GM, the Strategy, Government and International Relations Executive GM and five others in the top management team. The Executive is responsible for managing the research and operational activities of the organisation.
