ANSTO's general purpose is prescribed by the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation Act 1987 and translated into action through corporate drivers of vision, mission and strategic goals.
ANSTO is responsible for delivering specialised advice, scientific services and products to government, industry, academia and other research organisations. We do so through the development of new knowledge, delivery of quality services and support for business opportunities
Approximately 950 people work at ANSTO. The Chief Executive Officer is responsible to the ANSTO Board, which is appointed by the Govenor-General.

The ANSTO Board is chaired by Dr Ziggy Switkowski and comprises up to eight other members.
