Standards
In recent years, the neutron-scattering and synchrotron-radiation facilities have come together with the intent of establishing standards for computing in scattering applications. The biennial NOBUGS conference has become an international forum for discussion and stimulating ideas for cooperative software development.
A standardised data format would be very helpful for the international neutron scattering community. It can reduce the computing effort, which in some cases may be too expensive for any individual institute. A sophisticated data file for neutron scattering and synchrotron radiation should have the following characteristics:
- portability
- self-description
- extensibility
- flexibility of data organisation
- efficiency of data storage
- availability within the public domain
