Dr Suzanne Smith has over 20 years experience in the design and development of production processes for reactor and cyclotron radioisotopes and radiopharmaceuticals that have applications in Positron Emission Tomography (PET), Single Photon Tomography and radiotherapy.
This experience spans all aspects of research and development required to take a scientific concept from bench to production and incorporates extensive experience in production processes and conducting clinical trials.
In 1996 Dr. Smith developed the first routine production process in the world for the PET radioisotope copper-64 (Cu-64). By 1998 this product was available commercially within Australia. In 2000 and 2001 she filed two new patents in the SPECT and PET arena including a platform technology for the production of Cu-64 PET and Mn MRI imaging agents and the production of radiolabelled platinum chemotherapeutic drugs for the diagnosis and prognosis of cancer.
Her current program explores the development of novel nuclear sensors and positrons to advance the engineering of novel materials and the next generation of PET radiopharmaceuticals.
Dr Smith is widely published and invited to speak regularly at international and national forums. She is an editor on two journals and is often invited to write reviews and articles on her field.
