ANSTO is grateful to the Sutherland Shire Council for their formal recognition of the 20th Anniversary of the OPAL multi-purpose reactor this week.
Sutherland Shire Mayor Jack Boyd congratulated ANSTO on the 20th anniversary describing its activities as a project which has quietly transformed healthcare, scientific research and advanced manufacturing across our nation in the two decades since.
“As we reflect on the past 20 years, we celebrate not only a remarkable piece of infrastructure, but also the vision, expertise and dedication of the people who have made OPAL such a success.
“On behalf of Council, I congratulate ANSTO on this significant milestone and thank its staff, researchers and partners for two decades of service to Australia. We wish them every success for the decades ahead as OPAL continues to improve lives, drive innovation and strengthen Australia’s scientific future,” he said.
ANSTO representatives, Dr Jennifer Harrison, Acting Group Exec for Nuclear Operations, Safety and Security; Matthew Richards, OPAL Shift Manager; and Fleur Johnson, Senior Manager Government Affairs attended the council meeting.

“OPAL has not only delivered benefits to Australians through its nuclear medicine production and scientific research, but it has also become a valued part of the Sutherland Shire community,” said CEO Shaun Jenkinson
“ANSTO, through the operation of Australia’s only multi-purpose reactor, provides skilled employment opportunities. About a third of our workforce lives in Sutherland Shire. We engage local suppliers and contractors and generate economic activity by attracting interstate and international visitors, who stay in the Shire.
“We also support education and community initiatives that inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers and work with council on Indigenous Reconciliation initiatives,” he added.
