On Thursday May 7, ANSTO marked an exciting milestone in our apprenticeship program: our existing trade apprentices officially transitioned to direct employment with ANSTO. Previously they were engaged through a Group Training Organisation.
This change represents a step forward in strengthening how we develop and support our early career talent and reinforces our commitment to building sustainable, long-term capability across our workforce.
Trade apprentices play a vital role in securing the future of our on-site manufacturing expertise and the maintenance of critical infrastructure. By investing in their development we’re investing in ANSTO’s future.
This achievement is the direct result of strong collaboration between ANSTO, the AMWU and ETU unions. It also supports ANSTO’s ability to deliver a key objective outlined in Minister Ayres’s Statement of Expectations—to help rebuild Australian skills in precision design and fabrication by directly employing trade and technical apprentices and trainees.
ANSTO’s first apprentice under this new model will graduate very shortly—in July 2026—and has already secured a permanent role at ANSTO. We look forward to supporting many apprentices as they complete their training and transition into ongoing positions.
Congratulations to all involved in making this milestone a success—and welcome Trade Apprentices to the next chapter of your careers at ANSTO.
