The nuclear industry is among Australia’s most tightly regulated and ANSTO works closely - and transparently - with the nuclear regulator, ARPANSA, regarding its operations.
In 2025, ANSTO self-reported to ARPANSA a possible noncompliance issue in a legacy waste facility that is continually monitored at its Lucas Heights site. ARPANSA conducted an investigation and issued a draft report to ANSTO in January 2026.
On 22 April, ARPANSA issued a formal Direction to ANSTO under section 41 of the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Act. The direction is a pro-active and precautionary action. There has been no radiological release and there has been no injury to workers in the facility or harm to the environment.
The Direction requires ANSTO to provide ARPANSA with a number of updates including a detailed contingency plan for the facility; a comprehensive risk assessment update of the facility; and take immediate steps to initiate an independent safety and risk review of the facility.
ANSTO is taking these requirements seriously and is progressing work required under ARPANSA’s oversight. In line with its commitment to continuous improvement, the required actions are an important opportunity to further improve safety and safety compliance.
It is important to note the Direction does not relate to the OPAL reactor at Lucas Heights.
ANSTO operates critical national infrastructure that supports outcomes in health, the environment and advanced manufacturing. Safety is at the heart of its operations, and ANSTO is committed to the highest level of regulatory compliance.
