As Group Executive Nuclear Operations, Safety and Security, Miles has responsibility for all nuclear operations, safety, security and safeguards operations at ANSTO. The portfolio includes science and technology capabilities that undertake a range of mandated and sovereign functions for Government supporting a broad range of national security stakeholders. These include nuclear security science capabilities such as nuclear forensics. He leads ANSTO’s engagement with the Australian Submarine Agency to support the establishment of the nuclear-powered submarine enterprise.
Miles initially joined ANSTO to manage the safe, secure and sustainable planning and operation of the organisation’s entire portfolio of Landmark and National Research Infrastructure. He now has responsibility for nuclear stewardship across all ANSTO.
Miles has more than thirty years of experience in strategic planning and leadership of science and technology collaborations between government, industry and universities. He has established multi-node, multi-disciplinary collaborative research infrastructure networks for the characterisation of matter (chemical, mineral, biological) across a broad range of resolution and sensitivity scales.
Miles has a Bachelor of Metallurgical Engineering and a PhD from the University of New South Wales. He has extensive industry-based R&D experience in collaboration with universities, national laboratories and government agencies and has completed an Advanced Certificate in Management, Innovation and Technology from MIT and is a Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
