Water research

ANSTO undertakes research on Australia's water resources to inform more sustainable water management practices.

ANSTO’s environmental researchers use nuclear and isotopic techniques to develop robust scientific knowledge to address one of Australia’s and the world’s most challenging problems, the sustainable management of water resources.

The issue has both environmental and economic impacts.

One of the greatest challenges that the agriculture, fisheries and aquaculture industries face is sustainable water resource management.

With research expertise and nuclear tools developed over the past decade, we can provide estimates of groundwater recharge and maps of groundwater age and quality.

It is possible to identify regions that are most sustainable.

We are also able to quantify the impacts of decisions on water usage and other human stressors on the health of wetlands and aquatic ecosystems.

Our information is shared with key stakeholders, who need accurate and up-to-date information in order to manage water resources sustainably.

Water researchers contribute to knowledge transfer and capacity building in collaborative international water resource projects.
