Primary School Incursions

The ANSTO Education Team offer quality STEM and STEAM education experiences delivered to primary schools in the St George and Sutherland Shire regions of Sydney.

Incorporating an engaging mix of interactive lessons and hands-on activities, incursions are 1½ to 3 hours and fit your school schedule. They assume no prior subject knowledge and are suitable for groups with mixed learning abilities.

Online incursions are offered to students in all regions of Australia.

Space Science Incursion for 3-6

In this half-day incursion, students learn key space science concepts, are guided through two hands-on STEM activities and learn about space science research conducted at ANSTO.

Cost: $495 per session.

Shorebirds & Wetlands Incursion for 3-6

Students are introduced to shorebirds and their wetland habitats. They encounter the incredible journeys of our migratory shorebirds and how they connect wetlands in a fun playground game. Students also participate in a hands-on adaptations activity and learn about environmental research conducted at ANSTO.

This is a fantastic introduction or extension for classes participating in the ANSTO Shorebirds Competition.

NEW - Shorebirds Incursion Online for 3-6

Offered to all primary schools across Australia, this unique online incursion introduces shorebirds and their wetland habitats. Students join in our fun Migratory Shorebird Game where they encounter the scenarios the birds face on their fascinating annual journeys in different “flocks” and share their experiences afterwards.

Cost: $90* per session

Chemical World Incursion for Stage 3

Students take a close “look” at matter and learn about the atoms that make up solids, liquids and gases in the Periodic Table in hands-on activities with real samples. Using model kits students join atoms to create everyday substances and gain a great introduction to the chemical world. This is a great enrichment or transition to High School activity for older students.

Ocean Blue Incursion for K-6

Students learn about life in the ocean and the features and behaviours needed for living near the surface and in the deep sea. The properties of seawater are also considered, as well as human impacts. Incorporates an enjoyable playground game and choice of hands-on STEM activity.

Destination Moon! Incursion for 3-6

In this half-day incursion, we uncover the surprising science of the Moon and look at past and future lunar missions. Students are guided through two hands-on STEM activities and celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing.

Destination Moon: more missions, more science is the school theme for National Science Week, 2019. This incursion provides a suitable introduction to Moon Base projects.

Colour & Light STEAM Incursion for 1 - 6

Students learn about light and the colour spectrum, why objects are coloured, differences between coloured light and pigment and how our eyes see colour and light. They engage in two hands-on activities that combine science with art and encourage creative exploration of colour and light.
