One of the first events to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the OPAL multi-purpose reactor was held this week in association with the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI) NSW, Australian Institute of Physics (AIP) NSW and Royal Society NSW.
A panel discussion was held at Lucas Heights that explored the legacy and future of OPAL, Australia’s world‑class research reactor, and its role in shaping national and global scientific capability.
Panel members include Board Member Dr Greg Storr, who was the ANSTO executive responsible for the management of OPAL from construction to start-up leading to the establishment of a reliable and safe facility.
Jason Chakovski, OPAL Operations Manager since 2010, was also on the panel. He joined ANSTO in 2002 following completion of a degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of NSW. Having been involved in operations engineering at the HIFAR Reactor early in his career, he moved on to work on the design, construction, engineering, operations planning, commissioning and early operation of the OPAL Reactor, including achieving first criticality in 2006 as the duty Shift Manager.
OPAL Systems Engineer Sherry Chen represented the new generation of nuclear experts on the panel. Her work focuses on optimising plant systems and equipment through continuous strategies for improvements. This involves leveraging operational feedback and data analysis to enhance efficiency and performance of the team.
The program, which was moderated by Training and Education Coordinator Sarah Tyler, included a number of historic videos and photographs that captured the stellar operational and safety record of the reactor.

The event, which included an option tour of OPAL, was well attended in person and online.
