The evolution of molten salt reactors

Molten Salt Reactors (MSRs) are nuclear reactors that use a fluid fuel in the form of very hot fluoride or chloride salt rather than the solid fuel used in most reactors. Since the fuel salt is liquid, it can be both the fuel to produce heat and the coolant to transport the heat to a power plant.

Scientific Computing

Scientific Computing

The Scientific Computing team supports researchers by performing numerical simulations that complement experimental research. In particular, we use state-of-the-art software to perform computational quantum mechanical modelling, molecular dynamics simulations, lattice dynamics calculation, data analysis and visualisations.

Nuclear stewardship

ANSTO is Australia’s nuclear centre of excellence. It has a mandated role to advise the Australian Government on all nuclear and science technology matters.

Astronaut floating cells

Radiation biology

In space, without the protection of the magnetosphere, the type and dose of radiation is considerably different to what is naturally experienced on earth.

Infrastructure Magnetism

Infrastructure - Magnetism

Investigations of various aspects of magnetism can be conducted on all neutron-scattering instruments at OPAL.

Radioanalytical Facility

Radioanalytical Facility

ANSTO’s radioanalytical facilities are recognised internationally and have extensive experience in the measurement of radioactivity from a wide variety of matrices. Our primary radoianalytical techniques include gamma spectrometry and alpha spectrometry.
