Unsung Aussie Net Zero Hero

Australia’s Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) is well-known for facilitating incredible science and creating life-saving nuclear medicines, but for the last 40 years it’s been quietly producing a largely unsung net zero hero: Neutron Transmutation Doped (NTD) silicon.

Tree rings

Radiocarbon dating

Radiocarbon dating is a well-known method for determining the age of materials up to the age of approximately 50,000 years.

Capabilities

ANSTO provides access to specialised facilities and capabilities by application. Please ensure that you contact the relevant ANSTO scientist for advice before submitting a proposal.

Rottnest

Tritium & other LSC

Accurate low level tritiated water (HTO) data is an essential tool for groundwater dating and understanding groundwater recharge processes.

Nuclear and ionising radiation detection and dosimetry

Nuclear and ionising radiation detection and dosimetry

Our services include the use of techniques to develop innovative radiation detector technology, such as performing alpha spectroscopy to characterise charge collection capability and radiation transport simulation.  We also have expertise in measuring the electrical characteristics of novel detectors and semiconductor devices.

Gamma irradiation

ANSTO operates a range of cobalt-60 gamma irradiators, providing the Australian community with a range of irradiation services for medical, health, industry, agriculture and research purposes.

Study of polar ice confirms carbon-climate feedback

Investigators have verified and quantified the relationship between the Earth’s land biosphere and changes in temperature and provided evidence that temperature impacts the cycling of carbon between land, ocean and the atmosphere.

Cryogenic Permanent Magnet Undulator (CPMU) source for the BRIGHT Nanoprobe beamline

Nanoprobe beamline (NANO) - under construction

The BRIGHT Nanoprobe beamline provides a unique facility capable of spectroscopic and full-field imaging. NANO will undertake high-resolution elemental mapping and ptychographic coherent diffraction imaging. Elemental mapping and XANES studies (after DCM upgrade) will be possible at sub-100 nm resolution, with structural features able to be studied down to 15 nm using ptychography.
