About the program
ANSTO’s Apprenticeship Program combines nationally recognised trade training with hands-on experience in a specialist science and technology organisation. You’ll earn while you learn, develop in-demand technical skills and contribute to work that supports scientific research, health, industry and Australia’s future workforce.
Our apprenticeships are designed for people who are ready to start a hands-on career in electronics, electrical, mechanical or fabrication trades. You don’t need to have everything figured out yet — if you’re curious, practical, reliable and willing to learn, we’ll support you to build the skills, confidence and workplace behaviours needed to become a qualified tradesperson.
Opportunities may include:
- Certificate III in Electronics and Communications
- Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician
- Certificate III in Engineering - Mechanical Trade
- Certificate III in Engineering - Fabrication Trade
Over the 4-year apprenticeship, you will work full time, 36.75 hours per week, Monday to Friday. This includes your weekly TAFE day as part of your ordinary working hours while you complete your relevant trade qualification.

Who should apply?

Eligibility and Application
Applicants must:
- be Australian citizens
- be able to obtain and maintain an Australian Government security clearance
- successfully complete pre-employment medical assessments
- hold, or be willing to obtain, a Construction White Card
- not hold qualifications exceeding a Certificate II in Engineering – Electrical/Mechanical/Fabrication Trade
What disciplines are eligible?
Eligible disciplines vary by intake and are based on ANSTO’s workforce needs. Opportunities may include electronics, electrical, mechanical or fabrication. Applicants should refer to the relevant job advertisement for the specific disciplines being recruited for that intake.
Do I need to be an Australian citizen?
Yes. Applicants must be Australian citizens at the time of application.
When does the apprenticeship start?
Start dates vary depending on the intake. Specific details will be outlined in the job advertisement, but apprenticeship typically commence in January or February.
What Year 10/11/12 subjects are recommended?
We encourage students to complete subjects such as Mathematics, Science, Engineering Studies, Industrial Technology, Design and Technology, Metal and Engineering, or similar practical and technical subjects. While these subjects can be helpful, they are not mandatory. We welcome applications from motivated individuals who are eager to learn and develop a trade career.
Can school leavers apply?
Yes. School leavers are encouraged to apply if they are interested in pursuing a trade apprenticeship. You will need to meet any eligibility requirements outlined in the job advertisement and demonstrate a genuine interest in the trade and apprenticeship pathway.
Can mature-age applicants apply?
Yes. We welcome applications from people of all ages and backgrounds who are looking to start or change careers and undertake an apprenticeship. Selection is based on suitability for the role, demonstrated motivation and the ability to successfully complete the apprenticeship.
Do I need previous trade experience?
No. Previous trade experience is not required. We are looking for people with a positive attitude, willingness to learn, strong work ethic, reliability and an interest in hands-on work. Any relevant work experience, school projects, hobbies or practical activities can help demonstrate your interest and aptitude.
How often will I attend TAFE?
Apprentices typically attend TAFE one day per week as part of their ordinary working hours while completing their trade qualification. TAFE attendance requirements may vary depending on the qualification and training provider.
What support will I receive?
Apprentices are supported by their Host Supervisor and ANSTO Program Lead throughout the apprenticeship, with guidance from experienced professionals and opportunities to build workplace capability.
