ANSTO star to shine bright on international stage

Siobhan Tobin, a recent graduate at ANSTO, is one of the exclusive 100 Scholars worldwide in the 2019 Rhodes Scholarship cohort.

The Rhodes Scholarship is the oldest programme of its kind in the world, having been first awarded in 1902, and since then enabling young people the opportunity to study at the distinguished University of Oxford.

ANSTO’s CEO, Dr Adi Paterson, said he was delighted by the news, and said ANSTO was proud to have one of their own become part of this prestigious list.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for Siobhan and a bold testament to her hard work and dedication. It will allow her to pursue her studies at one of the most reputable universities in the world,” Dr Paterson said.

“This is also a tremendous moment to draw attention to the contribution of the young women in our organisation, and the wonderful ways they contribute to our world.

“Here at ANSTO, we are excited to see what new insights and discoveries Siobhan will take away from Oxford and we are confident that her new knowledge will further benefit our organisation.”

Professor Carolyn Evans, the Honorary Secretary for the Victorian Rhodes Selection Committee, congratulated Siobhan.

“The committee was impressed by Siobhan's passion for the sciences generally and physics in particular,” Prof Evans said.

“She had a wonderful mix of theoretical understanding developed during her study at ANU and practical experience from her time at ANSTO.

“Undertaking a doctorate at Oxford will give her an exposure to some of the best minds and cutting-edge equipment that will help to make her an outstanding scientist for her generation.”

The Victorian Rhodes Scholar was thrilled to receive the award for what it represents and for its enablement to pursue her passion for science.

“I feel honoured to receive this award and I am looking forward to being able to go on to complete my Doctor of Philosophy in condensed matter physics,” Siobhan said.

“I would like to thank the Victorian Rhodes Selection Committee for allowing me this amazing opportunity.

“I am very grateful to my supervisors Freda van Wyngaardt, Gene Davidson, and George Braoudakis for their support and their ongoing encouragement.

“As a new graduate, ANSTO has been terrific in giving me a platform to pursue my passion for science and I am excited to see how my time at Oxford will enhance my career.”
