Dr Paolo Imperia

Sample Environments Group Leader

Role at ANSTO

Dr Paolo Imperia is the Group Leader of the Sample Environment section of the Bragg Institute. The neutron scattering instruments of the Institute are supported by a large pool of ancillary equipment enabling researchers to manipulate the physical parameters of samples in terms of temperature, applied voltages, magnetic fields, pressure and gas loading.

The sample environment group, under the direction of Dr Imperia, manages the existing equipment, develops new concepts and builds new and innovative solutions for complex experiments involving multiple physical parameters and probing techniques in collaboration with the instrument scientists and the international guest researchers of the Bragg Institute. 

Dr Imperia graduated at the University of Cagliari (Italy) and received his PhD (Dr Rer Nat) at the University of Potsdam (Germany). He has been instrument scientist at the synchrotron radiation source BESSY II (Berlin), senior scientist at the University of Hamburg (Germany) and team leader of the nuclear materials chemistry group at ANSTO's Institute of Materials Engineering. Dr Imperia is an experienced project manager with years of experience in high-value, technology-oriented projects. Dr Imperia currently serves as Secretary of the International Society for Sample Environment. The society offers an international platform for collaborative development of sample environment equipment at scattering facilities worldwide. Dr Imperia is an active promoter of the society, member of the society board, and he has been member of the founding committee. 

Dr Imperia interests are in the areas of technology transfer, project and science management. The scientific interests cover organic and inorganic magnetic materials, organic electronics, functionalized materials and defects in solids. His expertise ranges from ultra high vacuum systems and high magnetic fields, to cryogenic systems and high temperature systems. He is a member of the German Physical Society and of the Australian Institute of Physics. He is author and co-author of numerous scientific publications.
