The Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) and the Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin (HZB) together with Asia-Oceania Neutron Scatting association (AONSA) are pleased to announce the ANSTO-HZB-AONSA Neutron School to be held between 16-20 November 2026. This event is a unique combination of two established events, the ANSTO-HZB Training Course and AONSA Neutron School.
The aim of this school is to provide the participants with both a broad overview of neutron scattering theory and knowledge of its application to a wide range of science areas. The course will consist of lectures and practicals, with the participants able to choose sessions using the neutron beam instruments of the Australian Centre for Neutron Scattering (ACNS) or learning the principals of the DFT calculations.
Subjects covered include:
-
Basic theory
-
Instrumentation
-
Diffraction and crystallography
-
Small angle scattering
-
Reflectometry
-
Imaging
-
Residual stress and strain scanning
-
Deuteration
-
Inelastic scattering
-
Quasi-elastic scattering
-
Polarised neutrons and magnetism
There will also be a presentation covering ACNS Sample Environment capabilities and a tutorial on preparing instrument proposals.
Participants will also have the opportunity to present their work to the lecturers, ACNS staff and, most importantly, each other at the school poster session and throughout the duration of the course.
The ANSTO-HZB-AONSA Neutron School has strictly limited places and is particularly suited to those who are new to or have limited experience with neutron scattering but are willing to explore the opportunity of how to apply the techniques to their research. We invite applications from Honours, Masters and PhD students as well as early career researchers from both Australia and internationally, especially welcoming applications from Germany, and the Asia and Oceania region.
We encourage applications from those studying the following suitable areas of:
