Three-year full-time PhD program is in partnership between the nandin Innovation Centre (ANSTO) and Design Factory Melbourne (Swinburne University). The PhD is based at ANSTO, Lucas Heights, Sydney, NSW.

The BRIGHT Nanoprobe beamline provides a unique facility capable of spectroscopic and full-field imaging. NANO will undertake high-resolution elemental mapping and ptychographic coherent diffraction imaging. Elemental mapping and XANES studies (after DCM upgrade) will be possible at sub-100 nm resolution, with structural features able to be studied down to 15 nm using ptychography.

Unique landmark instrumentation and expertise are a hallmark of ANSTO’s sovereign capability, unavailable anywhere else in Australia.  Our ability to identify the source of hazardous particulates in air, the age of water in aquifers and the detailed chemistry of toxic elements in complex soil and biota specimens are just some examples of ANSTO capability.

The SAAFE Program supports early career researchers at PhD and Postdoctoral level to expand research and innovation activities within Human Health, the Environment and the Nuclear Fuel Cycle, to initiate sustainable research networks and linkages to support Australia, New Zealand and France research and innovation.

The Infrared Microspectroscopy beamline combines the high brilliance and collimation of the synchrotron beam through a Bruker V80v Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrometer and into a Hyperion 3000 IR microscope to reach high signal-to-noise ratios at diffraction limited spatial resolutions between 3-8 μm.
