2022 has been a big year for ANSTO with contributions to the advanced manufacturing, space, food, energy industries, and more. As we set our sights on 2023, we thought we’d take the opportunity to share some of our key innovation achievements from this year.

University appointment

Using elemental data to combat illegal wildlife trade

This resource guides students through how to interpret and analyse authentic research data, generated during a collaborative project between UNSW, UTS, ANSTO and Taronga Zoo Sydney. The project examines the use of high-resolution x-ray fluorescence as a tool to combat the international illegal wildlife trade (IWT) of short beaked echidnas, which are being removed from the wild and claimed as captive-bred. 

Students will:

- examine the adaptations of short beaked echidnas that increase their ability to survive in their environment
- explore the use of technology in contributing to the study and conservation of biodiversity
- construct simple graphs of the provided data using MS Excel, and interpret and analyse these graphs
- investigate how scientific knowledge interacts with social, economic, cultural and ethical issues.

ANSTO Hosted IAEA Pacific Islands Workshop in February 2024

In early February, ANSTO was honoured to host the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) National Liaison Officers Meeting and Sub Regional Approach to the Pacific Islands (SAPI) Programme, which focused on the development and delivery of the IAEA Technical Cooperation Programme in the Pacific.

Chemical Deuteration

Chemical deuteration involves deuterating whole molecules or building blocks for the synthesis of a desired molecule by exposing them to heavy water (deuterium oxide) at high temperatures and pressures in the presence of a catalyst. If required, compounds can then be synthesised from the deuterated building blocks using organic chemistry techniques.
