2019 Shorebirds Competition Summary and Results
From June to August we invited primary schools in Greater Sydney/Illawarra and Melbourne to participate in our 2019 Shorebirds Competition. Students in Years 3 to 6 were asked to create a public awareness poster for a threatened shorebird found in Australia.

Year 3 to 6 tour outline and syllabus outcomes
The ANSTO primary tour experience has been enjoyed by thousands of students. Visit world-class science facilities and learn about the important role of scientists in society and the different environments they work in. Students participate in a fun and engaging "Colour and Light Show" and discuss their science interests with our experienced education team.

The winners of the 2018 ANSTO Top Coder Competition were decided at two keenly contested grand finals with Robotics hosted by UTS and Coding held at the ANSTO Discovery Centre.

2020 Shorebirds Competition Summary and Results
Primary students across Australia were invited to create a public awareness poster for a threatened shorebird found in Australia for our 2020 Shorebirds Competition. In response to COVID-19, and the changes to children’s learning environments, we opened the competition early and also included categories for individual children to enter, as well as school children.
A panel discussion with expert scientists and First Nations knowledge holders, as they explore the synergy between traditional Indigenous knowledge and ANSTO's unique expertise in areas such as #health and environmental science. Policy matters and Indigenous Cultural Intellectual Property will also be discussed.

The Think Science! competition encourages students in Years 3-10 to learn science inquiry skills in a fun and accessible way! Entry is FREE and there are generous prizes for winning schools. Any topic can be chosen, and special materials are not required.

Bacteria-driven remediation of iron ore tailings
Billions of tonnes of iron ore tailings are generated each year from the mining industry. Converting these toxic tailings into soil-like materials which can develop and sustain plant and microbial communities is critical for mine site remediation and improved environmental outcomes.
