Chemical deuteration involves deuterating whole molecules or building blocks for the synthesis of a desired molecule by exposing them to heavy water (deuterium oxide) at high temperatures and pressures in the presence of a catalyst. If required, compounds can then be synthesised from the deuterated building blocks using organic chemistry techniques.
Retrieving an Antarctic ice core more than a million years old presents challenges and opportunities.

Research elucidates how in situ cosmogenic radiocarbon is produced, retained and lost in the top layer of compacting snow (the ‘firn layer’) and the shallow ice below at an ice accumulation site in Greenland.
With world-class experts in groundwater and major contributions in this area over two decades, ANSTO completed a major project report on Improving groundwater sustainability and renewability using isotope hydrochemistry in NSW for the Department of Planning and Environment (NSW) and National Water Grid earlier in the year.
Investigators from UNSW and ANSTO have provided insights into the dynamic interactions of atoms in a promising material for sodium-ion batteries.
The OPAL research reactor's design and integrated safety features mean it is extremely safe; a fact confirmed by independent analysis.
